The Make A Way Mindset™

What is the Make A Way Mindset™? It is something I developed over time and I know it will be helpful for you too. The Make A Way Mindset is all about pushing through. I know it can be hard. I have at times suffered from my own (literally) paralyzing depression. This is not about what you can do when you are not mentally well. Take care of your mental health first. I promise you, you will thank me.

However, adapting a Make A Way mindset, may also help you on your journey to better mental health because you will be focusing on your dreams. Are your dreams crazy? They should be. Why can’t we dream big? Why can’t we want to change the world?

It’s no secret that I want to get a show to Broadway. Did you know that for years I did not speak aloud about this dream because I thought other people would think I was crazy? Heck I thought I was crazy. I thought, “Deedee, who do you think you are?” I also thought, “Who wants to hear your story. Who wants to hear your voice or ideas?”

Okay, here is where the mental health comes in because isn’t that kind of sad to feel that way about your hopes and dreams?

Guys, dreams really do come true. I just witnessed this, this week and it gave me goosebumps. My little girl, the little girl I gave birth to as a single mother before I even finished college, made it to Broadway! That’s right. This week my baby butterfly, Kayla Pecchioni, made it to the Broadway stage! She plays the role of Blessed in the original Broadway production of Paradise Square at the Barrymore Theatre in New York City. Wow!

Imagine if Kayla had these thoughts. She definitely would not have made it because there has been nothing easy about the road to make this Broadway dream come true.

Adapting a Make A Way Mindset is vital for your mental health because you need to believe that you were destined to be here. You need to believe that there are plans for your life. It is up to us to figure out just what those plans are.

What is it that you have always wanted to do? What is in your heart to pursue?

If there is a dream on your heart, it is there for a reason.

IT is your dream and that alone is what makes it something that others need to know about. That alone makes it worth pursuing. Following your dreams is good for your mental health. Over the coming year I am going to share much more with you about the Make A Way Mindset is and how you can develop your own mentality that is filled with a can do attitude. I am happy to share this with you and happy to talk with you more about defining your purpose, your passion, and your unstoppable mindset. The Make A Way Mindset™.

Let’s do it together.

Cummings founded Make A Way Media in 2014 after struggling to find books with characters who looked like her own children and an extreme lack of stories that reflected their life experiences. Books published by Make A Way focus on hope, diversity, social justice, and therapeutic skills for children and adults. Her work has been featured in HuffPost, Forbes, NPR, USA Today, Essence Magazine, Psych Central, Well+Good, and The EveryGirl, among other media outlets. In 2021, she was appointed to the Kentucky Early Childhood Advisory Council by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and reappointed to a second term in 2025 acknowledging her decades long service to the children and families of Kentucky. Deedee is also the founder of The Louisville Book Festival. She was inspired to work to highlight and celebrate a culture of reading in her community after working as an in-home therapist and visiting homes of children who had no books. Cummings believes literacy is a fundamental human right. Her work highlights inspiring messages that remind us all it is never too late to begin again.
